Screen Brightness Matters More Than Blue Light

Phone in warm evening light

Most advice about phones and sleep centers on blue light: night mode, warm filters, orange-tinted glasses. It’s become the default answer.

The evidence points somewhere less exciting and more useful.

What the research actually shows

Work from the University of Manchester found that brightness has a larger effect on the body clock than color does. A dim blue light was less disruptive than a bright warm one.

That’s a slightly awkward finding for the night-mode industry. Switching your screen to warm tones while keeping the brightness cranked up addresses the less important variable.

The effect also scales with time. Continuous screen exposure for an hour or more before bed does the most; a couple of minutes matters far less than the hour of scrolling that often follows.

What to actually do

Dim the screen. Lower than feels natural. In a dark room your eyes adjust quickly, and a screen that seemed dim at first will still feel bright after a minute.

Hold it further away. Brightness falls off sharply with distance. A phone at arm’s length delivers a fraction of the light of one held close to your face.

Watch the hour, not the setting. Thirty minutes of dim scrolling still means thirty minutes of being pulled awake by whatever you’re reading. Night mode doesn’t fix that.

Keep night mode anyway. Warmer tones are more comfortable to look at in the dark, and comfort is a good enough reason on its own. Just don’t let it stand in for turning the brightness down.

How this shaped the app

RelaxColors uses warm, dimmed palettes for evening patterns — not because warm light has a special property, but because it’s easier on the eyes in a dark room.

The app deliberately does not override your screen brightness. That’s your setting, and turning it down yourself before an evening session will do more than any pattern we could design.
